This article is based on a true experience that took place with my web host. I am not here to blame or try to give my web host a bad name, I am here to give an honest web host review, that makes sense to you before choosing a web host provider that is right for your business.

All web host are created equal in my eyes, that is, or that used to be, until I got shut down without warning. It was very hard for me to understand how I could start a new website from scratch and eat up 40 Gigs of bandwidth in that short span of time (3 months, and I was shut down).

You should do a web host review, before you make a choice. The problem online today is, how can you make a sound web host review with all the thousands out there.

It is impossible to review the thousands of web host out there, but it is in your best interest if you base your web host review on high in demand providers. Many of the top marketers have their own server, and you can’t afford to pay $200 or more monthly for your own server.

For you to prevent web host shut down, you will have to learn how to use the forums to find recommendation for choosing your web hosting provider. I didn’t do my own research and that is why my web host shut me down without notice.

After being shut down, I went to two of my favorite forums and read a couple of post regarding my hosting company, and realized that no one had any great experiences with that company. They gave poor web host review grades for that host, well life is a learning process, and I know what not to do when choosing a web hosting provider.

Here are four tips you should follow to get a web host review:

1) Don’t ever go for unlimited domain names.

One other point worth mentioning, don’t ever go for unlimited domain names, whenever you create a new account they automatically divide up your hosting bandwidth. That means that if you have just 40 Gigs of bandwidth and you divide it up by four domain names, you have used up all your bandwidth.

So, any other new domain name you add will make you exceed your bandwidth, please understand I am just showing you the rip offs that takes place with some low cost web hosting providers. They say that they will warn you when you’re exceeding your bandwidth, but they just never do. They make you pay extra for unlimited domain names, but you being new to the Internet, you won’t ever need more than three to six domain names to get you started.

2) Don’t go with any web hosting provider that requires the full amount up front.

They offer low cost web hosting if you pay the yearly price up front. Well, once you have paid for the year, you are tied to this company, should their service is not worthy, and you will loose your initial yearly payment. Go with a company that has a 3 month or monthly payment plan, with a money back guarantee.

3) Test by sending a simple email to your web host first.

Just send off a simple email telling your web host that your interested in their hosting, this is a must for you to review web host that are unknown. The response time to your email will let you know what type of service they offer.

4) Ask for a charge back.

As you know, the client is supposed to be king, keep all your receipts in place, and should you ever be shut down by your web host after paying a yearly plan, just go to your credit card provider and file a complaint for a refund. Don’t let anyone scam you out of your money.

The final conclusion, you’re the one to blame if you get scammed, so make sure you follow my web host review tips before handing out your credit card.

It would be very frustrated when your web site is broken and cannot be access. At this time, if you know about what kinds of support you can get from your web hosting service provider, you will be in a better position to get your site up.

If your web hosting service providers are really care about their service, you will be able to find 4 types support channel from them. You can leverage those services according to the serious level of your web site.

1) Online Knowledge Base

This is the documents center from your vendor, you can see a lot of online help document which will tell you how to handle some very common issues. If the issue from your web site is not too serious for you, and you also happen to have a lot of time, if should be fine for you to go through the online knowledge base to see if your issue can be resolved by yourself. And this is also very helpful if you want to learn some technical knowledge about web hosting.

2) Email support

In the most web hosting vendors site, you can find a place which will allow you to open a ticket to describe the issue you have met, and very soon you can receive an email from the engineer in their company to tell you how to handle your case. Email support system is treated as a very important part of the web hosting service. If they cannot manage this well, they will lose their customers very soon.

Try the email support if the situation is not too bad and you don’t know the answer as well.

3) Live Chat Support

Live chat support is the one I like most,. By this method, I can chat with the engineer immediately, and get the problem resolved steps by steps with the guide from them. But not all the companies will provide this type of service, you need to pay attention to their support system to see it is there. Usually, I only sign the offer with those who provider Live Chat support.

4) Toll free phone support.

This is for very urgent case, you want to get the problem resolved as soon as possible. At this time, you can pick up the phone and ask for help. The same as live chat support, not all companies provide you with this type of service, if your business is really very important to you and cannot be offline for even 1 hour, you should only work with those who provide toll free phone support, and it will be better that the support is 24*7 available.

As for above 4 types of support channel, email support is very basic, if a web hosting service cannot reply your email prompted, you should not work with them, since this is also happened in the company with very poor service.

And you should try to signup with those providing live chat support, which will ease you a lot when you are in trouble with your site. For toll free phone support, this is just a nice to have feature unless your web site is not very critical.

Overselling is a known industry fact in web hosting. The vendor know that their customer will never use their resources. And it is safe to assume that the clients will maybe use 75% of the resource purchased. To the web host vendor, this means that they can sell more resources than what they actually have.

Overselling is safe in most case if the vendor can manage it well. But sometimes, things might be out of control, system becomes not reliable because of too many web sites are hosted in one server, or you might not be able to find someone to answer your question for too many requests is in the queue.

So, not to work with those who are in the trouble of overselling is one of the key factors in finding a reliable environment for your site. And below are 2 methods you can leverage.

1) Verify their customer service system

There are many ways to see to do it. For email support, you can send an email to them for some question to see how fast you can receive a feedback. Right now, the most companies will promise you a reply within 24hours, and for those with great customer support, usually you can get an answer very soon, probably just couple hours.

And you also can give them a call to see whether their phone support really work. There are a lot of case happened that the toll-free support number are always in a busy status. I do complaints this to their support via online chatting system. And what I get is a smiling without any explanation. With this, you will know that even those supporters within their own company know it doesn’t.

2) Go to some customer review web site to see the feedback

It would be good to spend some time to read through some customers feedback for your potential service providers considering you might host your important web site there. For this one, you also need to care about it. Some web hosting companies use very aggressive marketing methods, they might hire people to write the good review for them, and put those review into the forum, hosting review site, etc. The latest case is for web-hosting-buzz.com, the affiliate link or promotion links are put everywhere in forum, but actually, it’s not so good as they have described.

Since right now, most of the web hosting service providers will give you at least 30 days trial periods, it’s important to leverage this opportunity to verify the operation status so that you can put your money and business in safe.

The contrary cardinal accrual that these sites instance is that abundantly of them quote a classifying abetment and the flexibility for clients to berth comments or reviews. These comments reveal a lot about a hosting company!

All the hosting ...

Before we talk about what it takes to be a cheap and good quality web host, let’s get to the fundamental first. What is a Web Host?

A web host is a service provider that places your web site on a computer which is connected to the internet. The term for this ‘computer’ is called a server.

A web hosting provider will typically have a fast connection to the Internet and they may host thousands of web sites on many servers. The web host essentially rents out space to you so that you can get your website up on the world wide web.

With a well-managed web host, you can free yourself from worrying the up-keep of complicated server technology and proper technical maintenance. That’s the whole purpose of the web hosting companies. You should leave the technical work to web hosting professional while you focus on your own internet business.

Let’s begin…

Feature Offered

The features that web hosting companies are offering are getting quite standard nowadays.

The followings are some of the common features you’ll see in most web hosting plans: Control Panel

Control Panel is an interface where you can access your site on the web server, allowing you to set-up and subsequently update and customize your web site. Though cPanel is by far the most popular control panel, some hosting providers customize their own so that they can up-grade and expand it at will. Diskspace

A vast majority of sites that don’t have tons of graphics, sound and video clips or downloadable files easily fit in 50 MB of disk space. You should always leave yourself some room for growth or check if the host has a bigger plan in case you need to upgrade. Bandwidth

Bandwidth is the amount of data transmitted or received through a unit of time. In web hosting, bandwidth is consumed when visitors make requests for files on your web site and download them to their personal computers. Email Account

With POP3 email accounts you can check email from Outlook, Netscape Mail, Eudora or any other Email software. Scripting language

As all our top 10 listings are using Unix and Linux platform, php, perl and CGI are the languages we are talking about here. It is best to choose a host that supports the latest version to maximize the latest web technologies for the fee that you pay. Database

If your web site is going to store a lot of data that should be dynamically accessible (like user accounts, stock prices, maps, Interactive news, message boards and forum etc.), you’ll need to look for an account that offers a database. MySQL is a powerful and most popular database program that runs on the Linux operation system. It is able to handle million of entries all at once. Its flexibility and speed allow you to also store logs and pictures. MySQL is designed to scale well under heavy traffic conditions and is ideal for database-intensive or e-commerce-enabled Web sites. Customer Service/Support

No matter if you are an expert or a novice in web hosting, you need a web host with good customer support system. What is the criteria of an excellent customer support? Let us explain. How big is the knowledge base?

This is particularly important for those who want to search for quick answer without seeking direct assistance from customer support staff. Due to the huge database, normally it’s searchable. Some web hosting providers will even make your life easier by making a video tutorial guiding you step by step in setting up your new account. Very useful for beginner. Responsive customer service staff.

If you are too lazy to find the answer out of a big pool of database, get the direct answer from someone who knows it. Direct customer support comes in a few forms.

a. Email support

b. Phone support: Normally, sales and technical support uses separate phone line. A good phone support staff knows what your problem is and answers with relevance.

c.Web Host like Lunarpages and Globat even have live chat support. However, it’s not how many support channels that are available but how responsive it is of the staff. You can find out the hosting reviews and ratings of each of our Top 10 Cheap Web Host.

Price to Disk Space / Price to Bandwidth Ratio

Are you paying too much for your Web Hosting Plan?

Having done the research on hundreds of web hosting companies, in general, we’ve come to this conclusion: the more disk space and bandwidth you are getting, the more expensive is the monthly price.

To help you understand which price is competitive enough for you to take up the offer, we have categorized 5 different price range. For each price range, a score of maximum of 10 is assigned. To understand the concept behind this, please refer to the details here.

Popularity

A web host might have the best feature offered, unbeatable customer support and reliability in place but without an effective marketing plan, it will go bust too. Let’s face it. If a web hosting provider does not have sufficient members and steady growth of new members, it’s very difficult to survive in this highly competitive industry.

We judge the popularity of a particular web hosting provider by looking at the number of awards won, the reviews of other websites and the Alexa traffic ranking.

All the hosting providers listed on our Top 10 Cheap Web Hosting Directory are among the top 40,000 most visited websites in the world.

Reliability, Speed and Uptime Guarantee

Nothing can hurt you more than this: your visitors come to your web site only to find that it’s not accessible. You lose credibility and possibly even a sale. If your web host does not guarantee at least a 99% uptime, leave the web host now!

To ensure maximum uptime, installation of redundant back-up systems is essential. Each web host has their own management systems to minimize downtime. “Redundant” means that if any of the Internet connections get interrupted, the alternate Internet connection will take over.

We use Alertra software to monitor the uptime of each of our top 10 web hosts.

As for speed, even though routing, web server set up and local area networks play a part in determining the speed of a site, the main concern of how fast your site is depends very much on the types of network connections.

Many hosting providers still connect to the Internet through T1, or T3 connections. This is not the case for our top 10 hosts- they are using OC (Optical Carrier) lines.

A T1 line will offer data transfer rate of 1.5 Mbps (megabits per second), while a T3 line can supply data transfer rates of 43Mbps. OC-1 refers to a circuit that transmits 51.85Mbps. Higher levels are multiples of that speed. Ultra-High Speed OC3 and OC12 lines offers 155Mbps and 622Mbps respectively. Some hosting providers have connections to major internet backbones at the speed of OC48 (2488Mbps) and OC96 (4976Mbps).

Have you ever been ripped off by web hosting provider? Be frank, I have. And the experience is painful. I have tried a web hosting before that claimed to offer lifetime hosting for one time fee. I was blown away by the ads in an auction site, and decided to give a go due to seller’s reputation. But guess what? After 2 months, the server went down without any notice. And there was nothing I could do. In this article, you will find 3 useful pointers to avoid being scammed like me.

Is the offer too good to be true?
If a web hosting provider offers unlimited web disk space for one fixed lump sum payment, isn’t it a bit unrealistic? Hosting industry is a very competitive market. Companies are getting their share by either, giving more features or discounts. But some are just looking for short term profit, just like the one in my case. Your best bet is to identify the market price in the industry and compare different hosting plans. Be realistic in choosing the right plan.

Does the service meet my requirements?
Depending on teh infrastructure of your website, you may need a dedicated hosting option, or just a simple shared hosting. Obviously, if you are merely running a personal web site without much dynamics or server side requirements, you won’t need those premium hosting plan with mega disk space and technical support. You will also need to consider the server side language adopted by the server. Do you need a windows or linux hosting? Make sure to check if your web script is compatible.

Is the company credible?
Even if a web hosting plan is reasonable, it doesn’t imply that you can totally trust the service provider. Try to read web hosting reviews for your favorite companies. How long have the companies been in business? Pay attention to the security measures and support channels. You will need help from the staff who manages the server hardware for you.

When you buy a web host, make sure to compare hosting plans. Check your hosting needs, and read hosting reviews. These can assure that your purchase matches with your expectation of the web hosting company. Are you tired of looking for a good web hosting provider? There are two hosting services I can recommend, and they are ezwayhost.com and builthost.com. They are both highly reputated in the industry. I can tell if I had known about them earlier, I would not have made that mistake again.

What’s Overselling

Overselling is a term used in the web hosting industry to describe a situation in which a company provides hosting service that are unsustainable if every one of its customers uses the full extent of services advertised. The term is usually referred to the web space and bandwidth transfer allowance, but now has been extent to the service after the selling.

Below is an example will give you a better understanding about what’s overselling:

If web hosting company has a server with disk space 100GB, and it will host 10 web sites for different customers and promise 20GB diskspace for each, then overselling will happen.

Why Overselling

Overselling is a marketing strategy. We can use the same case in above as an example. When web hosting companies provide 20GB disk space for each customer, and only host 5 web site in one server, he will find that not all the customers have used up all 20GB space, there will be a lot of space there without being used. So, the service providers decide to take some risk, and sell more accounts in one server. What he bets on is that not all the customers will use up all the signed resource.

Is Overselling Bad?

Overselling is very common in almost all the service industry. Let’s take the telecom companies as an example. They have millions of customers, what if all the customers dial out at the same time? Can their infrastructure support so many customers? The answer is definitely NO. So, shall they upgrade their infrastruture to avoid it, the answer is NO as well since it won’t happen in the real world. So, overselling is not really bad if you can monitor the service status closely, and make sure what you provide to your customer is still in line with the service level agreement, it should be ok. And overselling will bring more profits to the companies.

<strongOverselling in Web Hosting Industry

I believe almost all the web hosting companies now are using overselling strategy in their business. They host thousands of web sites in one server, promise thousands of GB for each and only charge you less $10 per month. Some of companies can manage the overselling very well and are able to keep up with the serivce they have promised to their customers. But in most case, what we heard are:

Server becomes in-stable and more downtime happened on the web site:

Connection speed become slow

No one response for the support tickets, customer service turn out to be very bad.

How to Win by Using Overselling Strategy

As a web hosting company, in order to fall into the trouble brought by overselling, below are some methods which definitely should be referred to:

Closely monitor the bandwidth and disk space usage of the domains in each server, and figure out the best numbers of the accounts can be hosted in one server in overselling situation.

Extend the bandwidth of the datacenter monthly according to the growth of the customers. Renew the bandwidth contract monthly will help the web hosting companies balance the cost and the service in a good manner

Hire more people if too many cases coming in, this is necessary since when they oversell their product and get more customers in, they will need more people to maintain the customer service level. It would be very helpful if they can figure out one supporter can serve how many customers. In this case, they can plan the hiring according to the growth of their customers.

Summary

Overselling can help making more money without investing too much, but keeping up with the service level agreement is a key thing should not be forget in companies what to win in this marketing strategy.

Lost in a sea of web hosting services? With every web host claiming to be the best web hosting service out there, it is difficult to decide on one company without looking back. That is where web hosting reviews come in. There are a plethora of sites on the internet that’s primary purpose is to provide web hosting reviews that allow consumers to easily compare prices and services.

Some of them also provide a space for customers themselves to give web hosting reviews. Whether you are seeking a web host for your blog, online business, or personal web site, getting the professional and personal opinions before deciding on a host is a must. In order to make the most out of reading web hosting reviews, here are some pointers to keep in mind.

Cheaper Does Not Always Mean Better

You might be tempted to go straight to looking at the reviews for budget hosting sites. While it’s true that you don’t necessarily have to sacrifice quality if you pay less, make sure to read the fine print. Some budget sites have hidden fees and you won’t know about them until it is too late unless you do your research.

Ultimately the purpose of your website along with how much disk space and bandwidth you need are all going to play a huge role in your decision. If you are unsure about how much space you will need but are certain that it will be large, look into unlimited plans. Further, look for web hosting reviews written by customers who are using their sites for similar purposes so you can get a more relevant opinion.

Seeking Out Sincere Reviews

Perhaps some looking around has led you to a large quantity of Top 10 web hosting services lists that claim that one host or the other is great for whatever reason. It doesn’t take detective skills to figure out that these are sponsored reviews so obviously they are going to be biased. While choosing the cheapest provider isn’t always the best idea, just because one service is more expensive than the other doesn’t make it any better either and that is where real customer reviews come in.

Open forums are a great place to get web hosting reviews from real customers when you are stumped between two companies. A good rule to follow is to write a list of up to 20 companies initially and search for web hosting reviews from a variety of sources until you are able to narrow down your list to just a few.

Finding the right fit when it comes to choosing a web host is not easy but by doing your research and finding web hosting reviews from a variety of sources, you are on the right track. Your best bet is to compile a list of the potentials and make a chart comparing their services, bonuses, and prices. Web hosting reviews will help you narrow down your choices so you can reach a decision that you won’t regret.
