Before optimisation of your site’s copy can even begin many, many hours are spent on the process of selecting the best possible key phrases to optimise the site for. Unless you are certain that the keywords / phrases you are optimising your site for are the right ones, there is very little point in employing SEO at all. However if the best possible keywords / phrases are selected the results will astound you.
The ultimate selection of the keywords is more of an art than an exact science. Each search engine marketer has their own preferences when it comes to keyword research tools – the tools discussed in this article are my top five!
Keyword Discovery
My personal favourite – Trellion’s Keyword Discovery Tool, captures data from an impressive 180 international search engines. Compared to Wordtracker, which uses meta-search engines, Trellion’s data is far more comprehensive, with the database consisting of approximately 32 billion searches from the last 12 months.
Keyword Discovery features include: reporting on the frequency of searchers for specific key phrases, specific industry keywords, KEI analysis, Keyword Density analysis, related key phrase searches, common misspellings and synonyms as well as seasonal search trends.
For keyword research, the more information you have at your disposal – the better. The sheer volume of data produced by Keyword Discovery will no doubt impress you. While some tools return a few hundred results you have thousands being returned by Keyword Discovery. The awesome project logging feature will save you vast amounts of precious time while the seasonal search trend reporting feature will expose you to the keywords which performed best over certain times (such as the summer holiday season).
SearchStatus
SearchStatus was developed by Quirk’s own CEO, Craig Raw, for the highly specialised needs of search engine marketers. SearchStatus is a definite must have for all you search fundis out there and is supported by Matt Cutts, lead engineer of Google, Danny Sullivan, the acknowledged father of search engine optimisation and Geoff Mack, product manager of Alexa. SearchStatus is essentially a toolbar extension that allows you to see how any and every website in the world is performing.
For every site, you visit using Firefox or Mozilla, SearchStatus lets you view its Google PageRank, Google Category, Alexa popularity ranking, keyword density analyser, keyword/nofollow highlighting, Alexa incoming links, Alexa related links and backward links from Google, Yahoo! and MSN – for the first time all in one place.
Like Firefox itself, SearchStatus is an open-source product, requiring no licensing fees and promoting user additions and modifications. Download this awesome SEO tool today!
SEO for Firefox
Aaron Wall, of SEO Book fame, recently released an awesome SEO extension for Firefox users. While this is still a relatively new tool to me, I will be using it more and more with each passing day.
“This tool was designed to add more data to Google and Yahoo! to make it easier to evaluate the value and competitive nature of a market. SEO for Firefox pulls in many useful marketing data points to make it easy get a more holistic view of the competitive landscape of a market right from the search results. In addition to pulling in useful marketing data this tool also provides links to the data sources so you can dig deeper into the data.” – Aaron Wall creator of SEO for Firefox.
When activated, this extension immediately provides you with a host of vital SEO information about the sites visible in your Google and Yahoo! Search results. This information includes PageRank, age, links, .edu links, .gov links, del.icio.us numbers, Technorati rank, and Alexa rank. If you’re a Firefox user check out the site and download it today, playing around with this cool tool is fun, fun, fun!
SEO for Firefox also links to some seriously nifty keyword research tools including SEO Book’s Keyword Research Tool, Overture View Bid, Google’s Traffic Estimator, Google’s Keyword Sandbox and Google trends.
Remember that excessive use of this extension may get you banned from data sources (including Google and Yahoo!), it also uses a lot of bandwidth – so remember to turn it off when you don’t need it!
Digital Point’s Keyword Suggestion Tool
Digital Point’s Keyword Suggestion Tool is FREE and displays results from both Wordtracker and Overture to help you determine which keywords and phrases are searched for most often.
The tools coolest feature is that it allows you to enter a keyword/phrase as well as the market you wish to search that term in (i.e. USA/Japan), but the market-related search data is unfortunately only relevant for Overture’s results.
Wordtracker
Wordtracker is definitely one of the old favourites when it comes to keyword research. With its statistics coming from meta-search engines only, Wordtracker compiles a massive database of keywords and phrases which online users search for. Apart from showing you how often specific keywords/phrases are searched for as well as the number of sites for which they compete. Wordtracker’s related keyword facility will expose you to related key phrases you’d never even considered. An awesome feature is its ability to differentiate between search terms that include capitalization, word ordering and plurality.
An extremely user friendly tool, Wordtracker displays results beautifully – the number of searchers conducted per keyword per day, the keywords which compete with it and the KEI are all displayed in one easy to use table. You can even save multiple projects where your various keyword lists are saved, an export option even allows you to email the list to your client – goodbye cutting and pasting.
Try out the free trial, but remember that this is just a small taste of what Wordtracker can do for you. Subscribe to this tool and you’ll have access to a host of additional features including simple search, comprehensive search, misspellings search, keyword projects and top 1000 reports. The folks at Wordtracker are so confident about their product that they even offer an unconditional money-back guarantee if you’re not fully satisfied with the paid service.
These are but five of a vast array of keyword research tools at your disposal. Play around to discover which tools best suit you and keep your eyes open and your RSS refreshed to find out about new tools as well as updates to old favourites.
Sitemaps 101 – Benefits of and Tips on Designing a Sitemap
November 30, 2009 by The Big SEO
Have you ever wondered how a search engine works? It must be fascinating figuring out how this search tool could direct you to several websites that are relevant to your keywords. Or, have you experienced instances where the link that supposedly contains your keywords is not exactly what you have in mind? You would probably think that there must be something wrong with the search engine that it generated irrelevant results.
How does a search engine work?
Two things figure greatly in making search engines work effectively and efficiently: the electronic search spider and the sitemap.
What is a sitemap?
A sitemap is basically a page or pages that serve/s as a directory by listing all the links to all documents and files found in a website. It is not merely a random listing of links, but organized in such a way that it gives the web user an idea of how all the information that can be found in the site fits into an outline or framework. It is like viewing the table of contents of a book, or viewing the “concept map” of the site’s content.
What is a spider?
In SEO language, spider is not an animal found in your closet. This electronic search spider is actually a bot which collects data and copies content to be stored in the search engine’s database when keywords are fed into the search dialogue box. The spider reads the content of the site and sends another bot to follow the links and copy the content contained in them.
What purpose does a sitemap serve?
A sitemap like any other map gives directions to a navigator. It primarily targets search engine spiders so that they are properly directed to your site and to the links where keywords entered in the search dialogue appears. As such, it is actually a useful tool in search engine optimization. A well organized site map would guide the spider to find the information it needs when keywords are entered during a search operation.
As an additional beneficial consequence, sitemaps have proven to be useful even to web users. Since a sitemap displays all the links to information found in a website, it helps the user to search for a particular topic in mind. Many users also use the sitemap to navigate between pages in a site.
What are the benefits of having a sitemap for my website?
1.No page would be left unturned
Going back to the purpose of sitemaps, having one would mean faster and easier tracking and crawling of spiders all over your site. As a result, search engines would surely get to the view all the pages of your site and not just the pages containing random keywords.
2.Easier navigation for site visitors
Once a web user has accessed your sitemap, they need not go back to the search engine page to look for what they need. If what they are looking for is in your site, then they would have an easier and faster way of locating it.
3.Potential advertising value
If it so happens that a relevant product or service company reaches your site, then it would be easier for them to see how best they can position themselves in the different pages of your site as a paid page advertisement.
4.Encourage greater traffic to your site
If your company website has a sitemap then potential buyers would have an easier time in accessing your latest products and services. Moreover, they would not miss out on any product that might be off future interest to them since the sitemap would display all information found the site.
How are sitemaps formatted?
There are at least three major types of sitemaps: indexed, full categorical, and restricted categorical. An indexed site map appears as an alphabetical listing or directory.
A full categorical map displays all links classified into categories; while a restricted categorical sitemap displays all links listed in a chosen category at a time. The full and restricted sitemaps are very similar except that the former displays all links in all categories all at once in a page, while the latter focuses only the links under the selected category for easier and less eye-straining viewing.
The most widely used format is the full categorical. Based on the results of a 1999 SURL study on sitemap designs, the full categorical format is most preferred by users since it is easier to search for topics within the site and it allows easier comparison between and among categories.
Some tips in setting up your sitemap
1.Link the sitemap only to your homepage.
This is to ensure that the spider starts searching from your homepage down to all the pages listed in your sitemap. In this way, no page would be left unvisited by the spider.
2.Do not go beyond 30 pages for a sitemap.
Large websites having 50 or more pages should not go beyond 30 since this adds more pages to the site, and might make search engines think that the sitemap is a link farm. Also, this prevents overcrowding of links which could be tiring to view.
3.Check all the links listed in your sitemap.
It can be discouraging when you click on a link only to find out that nothing is displayed. Test your sitemap; click all links in every page to make sure that all links are indeed linked to the right page.
4.Give keyword-rich titles to sitemap links.
Keyword-rich titles give your site more advantage in being searched properly under the right category. But be sure to have this sitemap link linked back to the sitemap (e.g. back to sitemap).
5.Provide a short description for the links in the sitemap.
Doing so would give readers a better idea of what to find in the link and save them time on surfing.
6.Be consistent in designing your sitemap with the other pages of the site.
Employ a recurring design and the same HTML template for all pages to establish identity and build character to your website.
Now that you have learned basic things about sitemaps, maybe it is time for you to build one for your site.
Keyword Research ~ What is Good Keyword Research?
November 29, 2009 by The Big SEO
Keyword research should be a cornerstone of your online business. Unfortunately many online business people have no idea what keyword research is, how to do it, and how to use it to their advantage. Once you figure out what good keyword research is, you will easily see its importance in your marketing strategy.
The first step in keyword research is to understand how keywords work. When someone comes online looking for information they usually go to a search engine and enter a word or phrase related to what they are looking for. Once entered, this query will produce a list of sites related to the word or phrase they have entered.
Generally the first listing will get about 40% of the people who do the search to click on it. The goal of keyword research is to have your site come up number one in the search engine for words related to your site that people are actually using to search for information.
Finding Relevant Keywords
When choosing keywords you want to make sure you are finding words that are related and relevant to your content. If you keywords have nothing to do with your site you will never rank in the search engines. For example, if your site is about dogs you do not want to go after keywords like credit card, or internet marketing. They are both very profitable keywords, but have no relevance to your site. You want to find keywords that are directly relevant to the content on your pages.
To come up with good keyword ideas think about what you want your site to be known for. Are you the best place to find organic dog food? If so, you may want to do some research around the term dog food, and organic dog food. You also can think about what your site offers. If you offer information about a certain kind of jewelry or bracelet, you would want to do some research to find good keywords related to jewelry and more specifically the type of bracelet you offer. Try to find keywords as closely related to what your site offers. If you find those they will be more likely to convert to sales.
What makes a good keyword.
Internet marketers throw around the term good keywords all the time. It can be very frustrating for a new online business person, who just doesn’t really know what that means. A good keyword is a word or phrase that is relevant to your site, that actually has people looking for it, and is not too competitive so you can actually rank for it in the search engines.
How do you know people are searching?
This is where many people fall down in keyword research. They come up with relevant terms to use for keywords but fail to see if anyone else is actually looking for that specific term. You want to make sure any keywords you choose have people searching for that exact term. You can use a number of tools to get this information. You can use wordtracker, and now even Google’s Adwords Keyword Tool will show you search volume. Using Google’s tool is smart because it’s information straight from the largest search engine there is. You may ask, how many searches do I need? This is a good question and will certainly depend on your site, but you should definitely look for keywords with at least 50 “hits” a day.
How do I choose appropriately competitive keywords?
People used to just enter their keywords in Google and see how many competing pages there were. This is not a very effective way to check for competition. Anyone can put up a website, and when you just enter your keyword you are getting results from every site that mentions any and all of the words in your kewyord. You can start by entering your keyword in Google with quotes around it. This will give you the results for all the sites that have that exact phrase on their site. Even better just enter your keyword and check out the first page of sites. What kind of page rank do they have? How many links do they have coming to the site? These are the things you are going to be competing against them for, so it’s wise to make sure you can beat the top sites.
As you can see keyword research can be a little intimidating, just because there’s so much to it. However, once you get the basics of keyword research you can easily find profitable keywords for your site. Once ranked for profitable keywords your site will be getting targeted free traffic, which is what every online marketer wants.

Yahoo Search Engine Gaining Ground

It is a fact that Google is the craze right now, but keep in mind the other search engines. I recollect when it was time Yahoo was the top search engine and before that it was Altavista on top. I wonder where that has gone. It is bizarre to know that Yahoo search engine has been completely dominated by other engines. This is not the complete truth. Due to metasearch engines, the Yahoo engine is still significant. Many use this metasearch tools, such as dogpile.
If you wish your site to rank high it should be objectionable to rank high wit yahoo or any other search engine. Tools exist on the Yahoo engine to enhance the ranking of your website and if you happen to run a web based bsiness, they can be of high amount of assistance to make your ratings rise higher like a bird!
Yahoo search engine is not my personal choice when compared to Google. I have reasons for this choice.I found this site very helpful http://www.commcloset.com. Google sorts out spam and other junk in an efficient manner and provides you quality hits as compared to Yahoo search engine. Its better to avoid Yahoo search engine if you wish not to browse through a host of
spam. No one has time to waste on junk. This is the reason why Google is doing better than Yahoo.
I have even heard somewhere that Yahoo search engine actually allows people to pay to increase their rating on the site. This is not advertising I am referring to. Google has them and so does every other engine, its not a big deal. You can tell by the way the ads are put up and some of them might be of help to you. But if Yahoo is the search engine of your choice then it becomes an entirely different issue.
You will have to wade your way through a whole lot of paid ads that are intelligently mixed with the valid results from the search you requested. Although other services Yahoo offers are good, for instance, Yahoo maps is the best direction service as per my opinion, yet when it comes to a search engine they are lousy at it and it is only the search engine that I am concerned about.

Doorway pages are pages specifically made for search engines. Leveraging Webmaster Tools for SEO Success-00-2003

* Feed the crawlers with your content
Create XML site maps, use proper formatting and put only relevant content. make sure your sitemaps update automatically so Google doesn’t have to crawl the same content again and again.
* Find & Fix Broken links: lists of broken links from the webmaster tools panel will help us fix these broken links which can easily disturb our users. Moreover, they cause the crawlers extra work which ends up with bad results, resulting in reduced indexing and credibility for the entire web site.
* Find Server Problems
the “crawl stats” panel shows last 90 of google’s crawling history on your site: How many pages were downloaded every day, how much data was downloaded and the bandwidth it took. optimizing server performance and code standards can improve these parameters significantly.
* Fix Duplicate Content issues
Google webmaster tools reports duplicate descriptions and titles under the diagnostics > content area. Google shows samples of duplications they found including the actual duplicate links. All you need to do is go back to the programmers and fix the problems and you have more spider food.
* Improve crawling Efficiency
In the past, it was a well known habit to bombard Google with as much content and pages possible. This was, to say the least a bad concept. While we do want Google to take as much content from our website, havin them index our “terms of use” over and over again is really a waste of resources, and based on the assumption that every website received a certain data and bandwidth quote from the crawlers, we want them to maximize the effectiveness of their visit.
Therefore the proper use of robotx.txt directive and nofollow links (internal too) may help to guide Google to our core content and the important pages of the web site.
* Remove unwanted content
using the manual remove you can remove certain pages and even complete websites from the google index fast and at ease. The requirement is that the pages either have a block directive in the robots.txt file, noindex meta tag or to return a 404 – then you can simply enter pages from yur site you want removed an they will be removed almost immediately.
This is good also to improve the crawling and ranking efficiency.
* Find bad outgoing links
A new feature from the Live webmaster tools panel enables reporting of pages suspected as malware as well as outgoing links pointing at malware pages. This is really cool and important and may solve a lot of problems.
* Pump up your link development strategy
Both engines show you exactly which pages are linking to your pages from within your domain and from outside your domain. Analyzing that list can help a lot to understand how engines see your incoming links, where you need to improve and how to do it.
* Improve your regional rankings
Google webmaster tools and Live webmaster tools both offer the option to set your geo-target which may contradict your actual server or IP address location. Moreover, Live webmaster tools offers a very coo feature which presents the nciming links to the domain with their regional setting therefore you can easily see where most your links come from and optimize your link strategy accordingly.

Ezines That Have An Online Archive
You should make it a top priority to start and build a file that lists ezines with an online archive.
SUBMIT TO THESE EZINES FIRST.
Use your judgement. How up to date is the archive? How many subscribers?? What’s the Alexa rating?
By the way, if you ADVERTISE in ezines that have an online archive, any links in the ad that reference your own websites will add to your link popularity.
Ezine Editors
You will be using mainly ezine directories:
Some editors print their ezine online but do not have an online archive.

Here is a PAID alternative.
This list is selective so it should contain quality ezines with no out-of-date listings:

Fee Based Article Distribution
Here are two paid article distribution services that I have used with good results:
http://thephantomwriters.com/x.pl/tpw/info/distribution/index.html
The service above was the first I used for the article below:
“Internet Marketing Strategy:The Advertising Co-op”
If you copy and paste the article title above, including quotes, at http://google.com, you will see the extent of this article’s distribution.
Most of these links are BACKLINKS!
I manually submitted this article to about 10-15 websites, but it was very time consuming. After using Phantom Writers the distribution grew to about 250.
After six months I used isnare for further paid distribution.
http://isnare.com/distribution.php
This service has a very moderate cost.

Use testimonials as a linking strategy.
These are testimonials that you provide to webmasters of high traffic, high page rank websites.
Give genuine testimonials of appreciation for tools or resources of a particular website.
When you send the webmaster the testimonial, give permission to quote you using your FULL NAME and specific city, state, and country.
Politely, request that a hyperlink back to your website be included in the citation.
By the way, what Internet marketer has used this technique the most?
By a wide margin I’d say it’s Joe Vitale!
(28) (28) (28) (28)
Write a review of a high traffic website.
Contact the webmaster and offer the free use of your review (in whole or in part) in return for a backlink.
Use keyword rich anchor text in your backlink.
(29) (29) (29) (29)
Develop niche website software where the user must leave intact a small notice that links to your website.
LMA uses this concept. Over time Duncan Carver, the originator of LMA, is likely to have hundreds of thousands of websites linking to his chosen website or sites through their use of LMA.
You must give this tactic some deep thought and try to come up with suitable software that would be installed on a user’s website.
All you have to do is come up with the IDEA.
You can always go to an appropriate website and hire a programmer to develop the software for you such as:
http://www.guru.com/index.cfm
The return on investment could be huge!
Be sure to have a Confidentiality Agreement prepared, that interested parties have to sign and return to you before you reveal your software idea.

Also, post to forums, blogs, and newsgroups to alert them to your free software and state anyone can link to it.
As an alternative you may have the software resource, exclusively to be used at your site (no download function).
By the way, do you think it would be a good idea to make the linking text keyword rich?? (lol)
Remember to vary the suggested anchor text as you post notices around the net. (SECRET #3)
(31) (31) (31) (31)
Be Interviewed!
Complete with backlinks to your site or sites, of course.
Use your imagination. Radio, TV, print media, ezines, even an email interview.
(32) (32) (32) (32)
Join associations or trade groups within your industry. Make sure their online sites have good page rank and have backlinks to their members websites.
(33) (33) (33) (33)
B2B websites should have contract language that specifically requires a backlink in pages that have already been indexed by search engines. This contract language should apply to all:
partners
subcontractors
suppliers or vendors
resellers or affiliates
(34) (34) (34) (34)
Host a Top Site
You will need a cgi program.
“Top Sites” are a ranking system. Websites that sign up with your “Top Site” are given a text link or button with their id, and they post this link to you on their site.
The more visitors the website sends to you, the higher it ranks. You know which sites send traffic due to the cgi script and the imbedded id.

(36) (36) (36) (36)
Use paid link text advertising.
Placing paid text link ads on high traffic websites that have a theme directly related to your website is a powerful strategy when used in combination with the above link building strategies.

Devise a strategy so that something you produce, an article, press release, etc., is picked up and linked to by one of these highly rated sites.
You can always benefit from news or media backlinks, but otherwise seek backlinks from theme related websites.
Knowledge that you gain from an authoritative source such as Publicity Pro Newsletter (see SECRET #21) should help you get backlinks from these high profile sites.

(38-44) Reciprocal Links
(38) (38) (38) (38)
Use existing link partners and online ezine archives as sources for reciprocal links.
Search the resource pages and link directories of sites that already link to you. Seek links with high quality websites that would offer significant value to your website visitors.
Do AD SWAPS with ezines that have an online archive of past issues. Naturally, in your ad you will have an url leading to your own site.
Of course your ad will include anchor text rich in appropriate keywords!
(39) (39) (39) (39)
Find quality websites with this reciprocal link exchange:
http://value-exchange.sitesell.com/tuition.html/
Take this step once you have installed LMA and are ready to request reciprocal links.
If you have other link management software in place, fine, but you should have a defined procedure for adding and maintaining links.
This exchange, originates from Ken Evoy of SiteSell.com, so you know it is a highly valuable asset. A good place for QUALITY reciprocal links.
Also, take advantage and download the free ebook, Make Your Links Work, while you are on this site.

Sign up with these 4 additional link exchange programs:
First a point of clarification:
Your primary goal in using these exchanges is to find useful and valuable info and resources for your website visitors. A by-product of your listing valuable websites is increased link popularity.
SO LINK TO QUALITY WEBSITES.

Your referring page will need to have a page rank of 5 since that is the minimum required by this exchange.
http://coopadnetwork.100freeworkathometools.com This is a free-to-join coop advertising network.
You exchange text links within this network on regular web pages not inside link directories.
Highly recommended!
******
http://links-for-you.com/ This program emails willing reciprocal link partners to your inbox.
Taking advantage of these programs should be a very productive use of your time, because the other program members have joined with the specific intent of developing reciprocal links.
Be selective!
Approve links to quality sites that have a similar theme to yours or offer goods or services you know your website visitors would be interested in.
(41) (41) (41) (41)
I’ll be the first to confess that I was on the Internet for five years before I knew that there was such a thing as The Google Directory?!?
You can use this directory to find websites with a high page rank and request reciprocal links with appropriate sites.
Check out the Google directory at:
http://directory.google.com/
If you locate the category or theme of the websites you want to target, they will be listed with the highest Page Rank (PR) websites at the top of the list.
Most of the sites near the top of the list will be PR4, PR5 or higher. These are the websites to target as priorities for reciprocal links.
(42) (42) (42) (42)
Obtain reciprocal links from websites that are linking to your competitors.
(A)Determine which websites are your main competitors. Make up a list.
(B)Sign up with Google alerts to determine who is linking to your competitors.
http://www.google.com/alerts (Due to technical difficulties you may have to “copy and paste” this url to bring the site up).
Enter link:www.yourcompetitorsurl.com in the “Search terms” box.
For “Type” choose web.
For “how often” choose once a day.
Be aware that you can use multiple queries and keep tabs on multiple competitors.
This is easily done by adding an “OR”. For example:
link:www.xyz.com OR link:www.abc.com OR link:www.roi.com
(C)Request a reciprocal link from suitable sites that link to your competitors.
These requests should have a HIGH SUCCESS RATE since you know for sure the target sites are actively adding links.
(43) (43) (43) (43)
Find theme related websites that offer reciprocal links.
http://yahoo.com
Your search inquiry should look like this:
“Submit a link” + “Your keyword goes here”
So a request for websites based on the keyword phrase “link building” would look like this:
“Submit a link” + “link building”
Be sure to include the quotes.
You can use other phrases instead of “submit your link” including:
“add your site”
“submit a url”
“add a url”
“add a link”
This is a sound technique to use for niche or mini sites, because it can be very hard to get search engine traffic for a mini site.
Add the link to your site first, then invite the reciprocal link.
(44) (44) (44) (44)
Exchange teaser articles with other webmasters.
What’s that??
A teaser article is one that has been cut short, and the reader has to go to another location, like your website, to finish reading the article.
If you get a few teaser articles on high traffic, high PR websites, you will get two huge benefits:
free targeted traffic
improved link popularity
I don’t have to lecture you about how much more valuable TARGETED traffic is than random website traffic. Obviously, you want to tease an article of yours that is relevant to your website content.
You should tease both articles in the exchange.
By tease I mean deciding where the cut off point should be. In other words do all the work and present a completely done package to the other webmaster.
Of course, you will have keyword rich anchor texts for both links (yours and the other webmasters links) as part of the package. And you will explain the value of keyword rich anchor text to your reciprocal partner.
Lastly, make the links open in a new window.
Tease outstanding articles and you will definitely see positive results with this technique.
Final Thoughts
Implementing all these secrets will take a long time and considerable effort.
Therefore, break the overall task down into several small manageable steps (MINI-GOALS) that you can meet by a SERIES OF SPECIFIC DATES.
The time management resource detailed in SECRET #11 is a powerful force that you can apply to maximize the tremendous impact you should get from following these link building strategies.
Start RIGHT NOW!
Best of success!

Top Keyword Research Tool Online and How to Use It
November 28, 2009 by The Big SEO
Keyword research is such a vital aspect to your overall success online that it simply can’t be ignored. You need to be able to find good keywords to target, quickly and easily. There are many paid options out there for your keyword research, but I must say that the only keyword research tool that I use currently is a completely free tool from the most powerful search engine online, Google. That is right, I use the free Google Adwords Keyword Tool.
The Google Adwords Keyword Tool is arguably the best keyword research tool available. With their latest update, I can now make this claim. This tool now gives you actual numbers from Google itself that tells you the volume of searches that are done on a given keyword. Before this tool would give you a bar with a volume indicator on it, but now they give you actual numbers. These numbers can really help you identify good keywords that you should be focusing on for your website.
How To Use This Tool More Effectively?
One simple method for utilizing this tool more effectively is to type in the main keyword of your niche that you are trying to target, and make sure that “Use Synonyms” is checked. That will bring up potentially hundreds of other keyword combinations that either use that phrase or a similar phrase.
Once you get your results you can find good niche phrase to easily rank for by sorting by the Advertister Competition. Look for the keywords that get some search volume, but have little advertiser competition or no advertiser competition.
Once you find these keywords you can go to Google and search for that phrase in there. The logic behind this method is that if people aren’t paying for these keywords in Adwords, than chances are people aren’t trying to optimize for this phrase on their website. Since there is less competition trying to rank for a phrase there is a better chance you have of getting targeted traffic from that keyword phrase.
Now, I am not saying that you just focus on these niche phrases when you optimize. You should optimize for the more broad phrases on the main parts of your website, but these longtail phrases are great for writing posts or for getting good search engine rankings for niche phrases. Don’t get discouraged if a keyword only has 1,000 visitors per month. That is not a bad thing because if you can get 5% of those visitors each month, that is an additional 50 targeted prospects that will see what you offer, and you do the work once to get ranked.
Why Does This Tool Blow The Competition Out of the Water?
Many of you are familiar with WordTracker as a keyword research tool. I feel that this tool totally blows Wordtracker out of the water because I feel the data is more accurate than WordTracker, and also the amount of keywords that this tool picks up way exceeds WordTracker and their limited resources. The other reason I like this tool better is the price. It is FREE! You can’t lose with it.
Other Important Notes
Also, when using this tool and considering the volume they show there, remember that these numbers do not represent data from other search engines like Yahoo or MSN. So keep in mind that across the board the volume is higher.
Evaluating Google
November 28, 2009 by The Big SEO
Google is the most popular search engine. Why is that? Simple. It delivers good search results and fast too. Google secret success formula is being simple and that’s what Google is: very simple. The home page is just a small search box with two buttons and the logo. When you search for something you can see up to three ads on the top and eight ads on the right. Google web search searches more than six billion pages and documents making it the biggest and most comprehensible search engine made so far.
The index is so big that I don’t know how can they organize such monster. Their engineers must be super intelligent to design such thing. Using Google is very intuitive, for example, if you don’t know a word just type a few characters that Google will probably give you the right word. Google web search is not the only Google product. Image search is also the best of all. It searches billions of images and it’s very likely to give you the right image right on the first page. The only problem like I said before is finding the image you want in so many ones. Google blog search is another very good product.
It searches all blogs in the world in almost real time. For example if you have a blog and you post an article, you will see it on Google Blog Search instantly. This tool is best use is searching news and recent things. If you want to search the latest news you can always go to Google News Search. It searches many newspapers and has all the latest news all the time. The information is always fresh. This is amazing to see the latest hapenings in the world. Google also has some disadvantages. For example, sometimes all you see is ad pages and junk in the first results page. Some people seem to know very well how google works and take advantage if it to make big money. Don’t follow their example.
Another thing I don’t like is the slow update of the pages. My website is updated only every 15 days and it crawls my website and finds nothing sometimes. To some websites Google is very stupid. Also some pages have advantages with Google and with less content they rank higher even if they have the same content on all pages. It doesn’t make sense. Anyway if you want to search this is the only place to go. Google specializes on search making it the best search engine in the entire world
