The chances are you will be one of the very lucky ones if your website receives any traffic worth mentioning at all SEO at it’s very core if applied correctly is designed to rank a website/webpage, for a pre-defined set of keywords, at the very top of the search engine thereby ensuring that a particular website has more chance of being clicked on than that of its’ competitor’s ranked below it This then should mean that a website having been thus optimized naturally rises to the top of the search rankings for those specific keywords. Although you need to gather a certain amount of information about your site, preferably before you build your site, once you have the right information, you can quickly and easily build a search engine optimized website that will get you traffic. Ask Jeeves has crawled more pages to date than any search engine, yet has not indexed a single page.
Even the inexperienced webmaster knew when there was some “search engine update” happening by watching their ranking reports and log file statistics, visiting the forums, or even reading today’s newspapers. However, metadata is still used by search engines to compile site descriptions in search engine results and (for that reason alone) is work investing a little time in. Some believe that HTML meta tags will bring you to the top of the search engine rankings. SEO is the suitable technique of improving the visibility of a website in search engine linking.

Writing For People And For Search Engines

So you’ve decided to get a website that’s optimized for search engines. You’re no dummy. You want your website to show up any time a search is conducted in your area of expertise. Who can blame you? But wait. Be prepared for twists and turns ahead.

The Bible says, “My people perish from lack of knowledge.” This is also true in the technical world of search engine marketing. Your lack of understanding of how search engines find websites can be detrimental to your success. In effect, you could lose your website investment, and lose again by not being at the top of the engines later. If your website is built and written correctly, you will experience a positive return on your website investment that pays dividends for years to come.

Before you start correcting the website content created for you by The Marketing Shop, or any webmaster experienced in SEO, make sure you have a firm grasp of search engine optimization. If you have a question about something that looks peculiar, ask your designer before you spend too much time fretting. Chances are–if it’s on your website–it’s there for a purpose.

Writing a website is a delicate balance between pleasing people and computers. Strike the right balance and you’ll find your website at the top of the search engines, converting your website traffic into loyal clients. Miss the mark and your site will be in no man’s land without a word to say.

Here’s a few things to know about search engine optimization before reading your website content for the first time:

Keywords are Paramount. If your website does not have the keyword content that people are using for search, it will not show up in search results, period. This is not quantum physics. Computers are machines. They can only pick up text. It’s crucial that we analyze what people are typing into the search engines and build your website content accordingly.

Keyword Research is Necessary. The Marketing Shop performs extensive keyword research for all our web marketing clients. We want to know exactly what people are typing in what into the search engines to find products and services like yours. Based upon our expertise in search engine optimization, we determine the best keywords and phrases to optimize on your site. We have many different calculations that we use to determine which keywords to optimize for and rest assured we’ve done our homework on the best keywords for the current development phase of your website.

Headings Must Be Search Engine Optimized. The headings of your website impact your website search engine optimization. It is important that they read in a precise way in order for you to “score points” with the search engines and rank higher in search results. There are at least three levels of headings (h1, h2 and h3). If you’re keywords aren’t here, your page won’t be optimized.

We try to maintain a balance by writing headings that are search engine optimized, and compelling for the reader. A headline sets up the structure of the page and entices people to read further. We try to do both wherever possible.

Your Page Layout Must Be Search Engine Optimized. Everything about your website must be optimized for search or you may lose valuable opportunities to gain new customers. Our websites have generally the same layout because our research has shown the layout to be most effective for SEO. While there are probably many better ways to layout your website, we prefer the way that the search engines prefer in effort to attract website traffic.

Your Navigation Will Make or Break Your Search Rankings. The navigation on your website is integral to your website for a variety of reasons. First, it contains links that help the search engine spiders get to where they need to go on your site. Second, it contains keywords that help your website get indexed for search queries.

We strive to create intuitive and easy to use navigation systems that are search engine optimized. Much thought goes into the creation of your navigation. Though it may seem strange, your navigation is built for search engines and people. Whenever possible, we will add keywords and key phrases to each and every link of your navigation. Here’s some bizarre things you may encounter on your SEO navigation:

Repetition Keywords: It’s important to put keywords everywhere, including the navigation system. Not only do the keywords score points for being there, but the link itself scores double points for linking to the page it’s linking to.

Re-Phrasing of Terminology: Sometimes we will need to breakdown the way you phrase something in order to make it match with what people are searching for in the search engines. If our research shows that people are not searching for a given term, we will change it to suit the search queries of the customers you want to win.

Localization is A Sticky Situation. Many of The Marketing Shop website clients are those seeking web marketing in a local vicinity. We do our best to bring you customers only from the area you request. However, there are times when our keyword research concludes that people are just not searching for your local area and we have to optimize more broadly. If this is the case, rest assured that targeting the broader area will still render results in your local area due to our expertise in local web marketing.

Each Page is Only Optimized for One or Two Phrases. The most successful web pages for search engines are optimized for only one or two keyword phrases. That means the title is about one thing and the page contains the same keywords sprinkled throughout with plenty of links reflecting the same keywords too.

Images are Invisible to Search Engines. If you were expecting a website to be a lead-generator that has more visual appeal and aesthetic stimulation, please reconsider. Images are invisible to search engines. Studies also show that people want information when they come on the web as opposed to a colorful “website brochure.”

Content is King. Content is king for a variety of reasons including for search engine optimization, for website conversion enhancement and for inclusion into Google.

Search Engines: Search engines can read only text. It makes sense to keep fresh, relevant content on your site for search engine crawlers.

Website Conversion Enhancement: People are on the web to get information, not to read brochures. The more information you provide for them, the “stickier” your website becomes and the more people will bookmark your site and rely on it for pertinent information. (See article on web content.)

Also, people who get free and valuable information from your website are more likely to rely and depend upon you when they’re ready to purchase goods and services. It’s a “give before you get” mentality that really works. Offer information and your website visitors will reward you with loyalty.

Another way good web content affects your website’s conversion capabilities is by showing your clients how you operate. Your web content is very telling as to the goods and services you provide. If you skimp on your content and your competitor does not, your competitor will win the business. Your prospects may wonder why you’re not offering adequate information. Do you not know what you’re doing? Do you have something to hide? Will you skimp later? It’s best to just ante up the info immediately.

Google has strict requirements for its top search result contenders, including inclusion in the DMOZ. The DMOZ is a human edited directory that requires unique and informative content as a barrier to entry. We’re in the Information Age, time to step it up and provide useful information.

The World is Changing and Your Customer is Well Informed. Why bother creating websites that are valuable to our website visitors? Because your customer is different today than ever before. Information is readily available to everyone. The person who gives out information most efficiently is the one people will rely on to do business with in the future. Customers are well informed, savvy and able to get information at the click of a mouse. We need to step out of the box and cater to the new consumer.

SEO Sites Can be Tacky. There are websites out there that try to capitalize on knowledge of search engine optimization by adding keywords flagrantly and abusing the system. The Marketing Shop will never do that as we rely only on ethical search engine optimization techniques. We care more about people than we do about search engine rankings. The only time we’ll put machines over people is when it’s very important to the overall SEO success of your website. Other times, we try to appeal human visitors most of all.

Conclusion

Before you get started, make sure you understand what it takes to get to the top of the search engines. Good foundational knowledge in SEO will help your site be more successful, and save your web designer and SEO professional a ton of headaches in trying to get you to understand what’s what. Please understand that The Marketing Shop will do nothing to your website without having a good reason for doing so. Please ask questions before you get frustra.

Google Tips that Every Entrepreneur Should Know

Google is a powerful search engine and has a stronghold on the Internet market. Therefore, many Internet business entrepreneurs look to Google for help in promoting their Internet business. Google has several features that can be used to your advantage including a Google AdWords Campaign and increasing your placement in the Google search engine results.

A Google Adwords campaign is easy to setup. The key is to set up your Google AdWords account and advertisements properly in order to garner impressions and clicks on your advertisements. The advertisements you run in your Google AdWords campaign need to be tested and tweaked on a daily or weekly basis.

You should run two to three advertisements at a time and analyze the impressions and clicks each advertisement yields. In most cases, you should only change one element of your advertisement at a time and then run another test. The reason to change just one element, such as the headline, is because it will help you pinpoint which areas of your advertisement are effective or are dead weight.

While tweaking one piece at a time is the recommended course of action, there are instances when you may have to overhaul your entire advertisement. These instances are rare, but can occur. For example, let’s say that you have set up a Google AdWords advertisement that gets impressions, but zero clicks. If you do not receive any clicks then you should redo your entire advertisement. The reason you want to change your entire advertisement is that you need to at least get some clicks and the current advertisement you have did not achieve this.

Another Google feature is placement in their search engine listings. One way to improve your placement on the Google search engine results is to link with webpages that have a high Google page rank. A webpage with a high Google page rank will have several back links.

Strive to find a website that has a high number of back links, but not just any back links. The back links should be to websites that are indexed in Google. If the back link is not indexed in Google then you will not receive credit for the link. Google won’t recognize the link as being valuable. Remember, Google looks for valuable back links and the more you have, the higher your placement in the Google search engine results.

Google also has a great program that can help you track your websites. The program is called “Google Analytics” at http://www.google.com/analytics. Google Analytics is powerful, free, and provides a wealth of information and parameters. An added bonus is that is easy to set up.

Increase Pagerank Fast With Quality Backlinks

The PageRank of a website is determined largely by the importance, or popularity, of the site based on the PageRank of the sites linking back to it. You must take advantage of quality backlinks to increase the PageRank of your site.

What are backlinks?

Plain and simple, backlinks are links that point back to your site. They are links you have exchanged with or received from other sites, as well as links placed strategically by you in forum posts, blog posts and comments, and the resource box of submitted articles. The submission of your site to website directories also provides backlinks that are highly favored by search engines.

Ideally these links, especially those placed in your forum signature and resource box of published articles (see my related article “Your Signature – An Internet Marketing Goldmine”), will contain keywords in the text of the link to create “anchor text.” Placing keywords in the text of the link anchors your keyword(s) to your url rather than anchoring “Click here” or your website name to your url. Not only do you have a backlink to your site, you have created a link of higher quality that includes the keywords you are targeting in your overall marketing campaign.

Why do I need backlinks?

The number of quality backlinks linking to a site is one of the main criteria used by Google and other search engines to rank and place websites. This statement, written by David Austin in a Feature Column of the Monthly Essays on Mathematical Topics, sums it up: “The fundamental idea put forth by PageRank’s creators, Sergey Brin and Lawrence Page, is this: the importance of a page is judged by the number of pages linking to it as well as their importance.”

With this all-powerful statement from the creators of Google, the importance should be clear: you need backlinks to attract the robots that determine the importance of your website. The value of your page, your website, in the eyes of Google’s robot lies in the number and quality of the links that it finds from other sites to yours. As the number of other popular, high-ranking sites find your site worth linking to grows, your popularity goes up along with your position in the search results.

In other words, quality backlinks are needed to entice search engines to stand up and take notice.

Backlinks are also helpful in leading visitors to your site. In this regard, backlinks are much like bread crumbs left by Hansel and Gretel to find their way back home. When your site is new, the robot will not place your site at the top of the results list immediately no matter how much time and effort went into the design and SEO of your site. Links from other sites that searchers are likely to find could lead them to your site if they look through the links page to find related products that might be available on your site.

In addition, links placed in posts to forums and blogs and the resource box of published articles have the potential of being seen and followed by thousands of visitors every day. If the forums, blogs, and article directories have high page ranks, you have more than just a link for visitors to follow, you have a quality link that will serve to increase your page rank as well as your traffic.

What are quality backlinks?

Quality backlinks are links from websites that have a higher page rank than your site, links from websites that have content or purpose related to your site (also known as relevance), links that include anchored text, and links that are built naturally over time, not a sudden increase in links just for the sake of having a high number of links.

Google has made it very clear that the importance of a site in the eyes of Googlebot is greatly influenced by the number and importance of the pages linking to it. In order to increase your PageRank, your website’s importance in the eyes of search engines, seek out links from higher-ranking sites that have related content, include anchored text in your signature for forum and blog posts as well as your resource box in articles, and let links build naturally over time. These practices will be a valuable part of your overall marketing strategy.

Search Engine Optimization: Building Quality Backlinks

November 12, 2008 by The Big SEO

If you’re serious about Search Engine Optimization, then one of the most important aspects is going to be building backlinks. More than any other aspect of your website except perhaps for keyword-rich content, who links to you and how popular they are affects your own page rank.

Any website can stuff a page full of keywords. But only legitimate sites—or so the reasoning goes—will actually have lots of other sites linking to them. Backlinks, then, become essential in Search Engine Optimization and website development.

But how do you go about getting them? Who are the best sites to get them from?

One of the best ways to get backlinks is just to ask for them. You might offer to exchange links, placing a link to their site on your website in exchange for a link to your site on theirs. Having strong content is another good way of increasing backlinks. People will naturally link to you if you have content that they want to recommend. Strong content is the only way to get links in SMO (Social Media Optimization, using sites such as YouTube, MySpace, and other popular ’social sites’ to increase your traffic).

The best sites to get backlinks from are, of course, those who have high page ranks themselves. Some webmasters use the Google toolbar to see just how high any given site ranks, but most Search Engine Optimization experts advise against this. The toolbar is not necessarily up-to-date or even accurate.

The best way of finding sites that you want backlinks from is simply to go to a search engine (and different search engines will have different results, so do this with as many as you can) and input the search term you want. For example, if you want people searching for “Orange County Website Design” to find your website, input “Orange County Website Design” into a search engine. Look at the top 20 pages (the top 50, if you have the time). Do any of them look like sites that might be willing to backlink to your site?

Go to each site in turn and find the webmaster’s email address. Send them a quick email, briefly describing your website (one or two short paragraphs, please!) and asking if he would be willing to backlink to it. If he doesn’t have that authority, he should know who does, and he should be willing to put you in touch with them. Be willing to exchange links if the website requests it, unless they’re a site you wouldn’t want to link to. If the site looks suspicious, don’t try to get a link from them to begin with.

Requesting backlinks this way ensures that the sites that link to you will have high page rank for that keyword. And it gives you almost unlimited resources. The top 50 search results in 10 search engines will give you 500 pages to query, and that’s just for that one keyword! Inputting a different keyword will no doubt change the order of sites a bit. Lower sites may rank higher, and higher sites may rank lower. Plus, it may bring up completely new sites. Some sites that rank high for “Orange County Website Design” will also rank high for “Orange County Web Design “. But some sites that rank high for “Orange County Web Design” may not have shown up at all in your quest for “Orange County Website Design”. Yet both sites would provide valuable backlinks to your site, which promotes all aspects of web design services in Orange County.

Getting backlinks is a huge and time-consuming process. It is, however, one of the most valuable things you will ever do for your website’s Search Engine Optimization.

Adsense Placements- Truth

November 10, 2008 by The Big SEO

If you are depending on Google AdSense for revenue for your website, you need to learn the truth about AdSense placement to ensure that you are getting a high number of clicks on the ads. When it comes to Google AdSense, not getting clicks means your website is not earning revenue! However, by learning the truth about AdSense placements, you will soon see a higher number of clicks on your Google AdSense reports.

The truth about AdSense placement is that there is a trick to it. You want to do several things to make sure those ads get clicked on as especially if you are depending on that income! Start by determining where to place the code on your pages. There is no one spot that is right for all websites and all WebPages. It just does not work that way. Each website and each page is unique, and the goal of the page is unique and therefore, the placement of the ads must also be unique.

If possible, you should use catchy tricks to get your ads clicked on. The more the ads look like actual content on your page, the more they will get clicked on. For instance, if you have a directory of listings on your site, you would want to make the font and colors the same, so that the Google ads actually looked like part of the directory listing. A good way to integrate the ads into content is again to use the same fonts and same colors, and to place the ads in the middle of the pages content.

The more you can integrate the ads into your pages in a way that looks like it is part of the content, as opposed to ads on the pages, the more clicks you will receive. You definitely need to match your ad fonts and font colors to your pages fonts and font colors. Retain the same look and feel of your website wherever possible. If you are making the ads part of the content or part of a directory listing, choose not to use a border around the ads. This customization can all be done through the Google AdSense control panel when you login to your Google account.

If you can not make the ads appear as part of the actual content, you have to determine where your visitors attention is focused on your pages, and place the ads in that general area where they can be seen. Again, you want to match the look and feel of your website, but in this instance, you should probably use a border around the ads.

The truth about AdSense placement is that you should place the ads where they will be the most visible to your visitors. You want the ad blocks to look like they belong on your pages, but at the same time, you want them to draw attention as well, so that your visitors will click on them. Furthermore, if you can include the ads as part of the content itself, you will find that you are getting a higher number of clicks almost overnight!

You have probably heard that putting your AdSense ads in certain spots on a page increases clicks. This is not necessarily true. Although some places generally are hotter than others, the ads need to be located where they will get the most clicks. Depending on the content on your pages, the layout of your pages, and your visitor’s attention, this will vary from website to website, and from web page to web page.

This brings us to another fact that you need to know. Placing the ads in a particular spot on one page is no indication that the ads should be placed in the same place on a different page on your website. Again, think about how you can integrate the ads into your content, and where your visitor’s attention will be focused. This will vary from page to page in many cases.

Just remember that there are many factors to consider when determining the truth about AdSense placement for your pages. What works well for one website may not work for another. What works well for one website page may not work well for all pages on that website. Experts are great for a lot of things, but when it comes to placement of AdSense ads on your website, you have to be your own expert!

Put Ads on Google Adsense

Why, on your web pages of course. Ok, just kidding. The real question should be there really any truth to the rumors that where you place those Google AdSense ads can actually improve response? According to my best information, the answer to that question is: Yes.

Google AdSense experts say that that there is a direct correlation between the placement of the AdSense ads and the resulting clickthrough.

When ads are placed in rather than response rates on Google AdWords goes up. There are also indications showing that ads appearing on the right side of the page get clicked more than ads appearing on the left side.

Advertising analysts with degrees in human behavior and psychology have spent thousands of man-years (people-years?) studying how people read printed and Internet content and what it takes to get them to respond to ads. While some of these studies are proprietary, or are only available to anyone with $10,000 or more to spend on a copy, other studies have been made public and can be read by anyone who is interested.

Google themselves has released some relevant information which is focused directly on increasing your Google AdSense response. You can read their findings Here. One of the most important factors in determining placement of your ads is the type of content that your site delivers. If you are primarily an e-commerce site, and you have a lot of pictures and ad copy for your own products competing for attention against AdSense ads, then it is going to be a particularly tough challenge getting any kind of decent Google AdSense clickthrough. It is situations like this that require very thorough testing and a lot of trial and error.

Of course, all of the studies in the world worth a hill of beans if the findings work on your web site. Experiment with your Google AdSense placement and track the results over a period of time. Google provides response tracking tools in your AdSense control panel. Learn how to use them. As you begin to see what may be only subtle differences in response, you’ll be able to determine what works best for your particular site. But don’t get complacent. Regardless of what the experts say, your best bet is to tailor your Google AdSense ad placement to.
